£20m Levelling Up funding sought to regenerate 10-acre brownfield site in Boston, Lincs

Up to £20 million in Levelling Up funding is being sought to regenerate a 10-acre brownfield in a Lincolnshire town.

The bid for Boston town centre is among £48 million of funding which councils in south and east Lincolnshire hope to win for schemes ranging from improving cultural and heritage attractions to revitalising under-used areas and improving health and wellbeing.

The Boston Borough Council scheme – called PE21 – would see the town’s vacant Crown House and B&M site, west of the River Witham, regenerated to include a health and leisure facility, offices, shops and flats, as well as a green open space.

Coun Nigel Welton, deputy leader and portfolio holder for economic growth at Boston Borough Council, said: “This is another great example of the public and private sector working together to help bring investment into Boston.

“This forward-thinking council is focussed on doing all that it can to help improve the economy, create new job opportunities and install a sense of pride for residents in the town.

“This is an ambitious scheme which could bring real change for Boston for future generations.”

Elsewhere, East Lindsey District Council has applied for more than £8.1 million to work with partners on cultural and tourism projects in the market towns of Alford and Spilsby, which are in the Lincolnshire Wolds, complimenting the Towns Deal funding already secured for projects in Skegness and Mablethorpe.

The bid includes £1.1 million for Alford Windmill to help save a historic mill which is on the Heritage at Risk register.

A further £2.5 million would go to Alford Manor House to create a permanent function space as well as the relocation and improvement of the tearoom and kitchen, freeing up space for improved displays within the museum.

Coun Adam Grist, portfolio holder for Market Towns and Rural Economy at East Lindsey District Council, said: “These buildings are of great historic importance and are much loved by the local community and wider East Lindsey. If successful, this bid will help regenerate these important assets, create new tourist attractions, and help secure their future for years to come.”

Meanwhile, South Holland District Council has put in a £20 million bid which could see the Castle Sports Complex site in Spalding remodelled as a health and wellbeing hub. The council also wants to invest in Extra Care housing in South Holland for the district’s older residents.

An announcement on the Levelling Up bids is expected in the autumn.
