There was an in-depth investigation Tuesday launched by Britain into the dominance of Apple and Google over mobile internet browsers and cloud gaming.
A statement issued by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) after an initial study earlier this year stated that the CMA would examine whether Silicon Valley’s behavior limits consumer choice.
According to the report, Apple and Google “have established a duopoly in mobile ecosystems” that hinders competition in operating systems, app stores, and web browsers.
According to the CMA, mobile internet browsing in Britain utilized Apple or Google technology 97 percent of the time in 2021.
The watchdog will investigate “how Apple and Google dominate the mobile browser market and how Apple restricts cloud gaming through its App Store.”
In a report released by the regulator, many UK companies and developers argue that the status quo harms their businesses, slows innovation, and adds costs.
According to the report, these restrictions will, ultimately, limit consumer choice and make it more difficult for innovative new apps to be made available to UK consumers.
In the meantime, Apple and Google argue that restrictions are needed to protect users.”
Considering Apple’s “competitive and choice-oriented approach,” a spokesperson announced the company would “engage constructively” with the CMA.
The company emphasized its commitment to providing “thriving, open platforms that empower consumers and enable developers to build successful businesses.” It stressed its commitment to deliver “thriving, open platforms that empower consumers and enable developers to create successful businesses.”
