Kelly cut the most famous goal in English women’s football history from three yards to beat Germany last summer in the Euro 2022 final. As a poacher, she maintained her importance as the Lionesses thrashed Belgium to have the Arnold Clark Cup on Wednesday night.
Kelly scored twice in the 6-1 hammering, counting to her earlier walkout (from the edge of the box, it must be said) in the opening game against South Korea to declare the overall golden boot.
Her first against Belgium was bundled in from the point of inches after an excellent run from Lauren James. In contrast, she capitalized on a collapse from goalkeeper Nicky Evard to get her second.

“It is a great feeling, it was excellent preparation, and we are creating momentum,” the Manchester City star told ITV on helping England win the tournament – Kelly wasn’t involved in the 2022 edition due to her continued recovery from an ACL injury.
In April, England is next in action against Brazil for the 2023 Women’s Finalissima, a new contest that pits the European champions against the South American winners. After that month, a home close is secured against Australia in Brentford, with the Lionesses to extend their World Cup crusade against first-time qualifiers Haiti on July 22 in Brisbane.
England took the information early when Chloe Kelly slashed the opening goal in the 12th minute. Just before halftime, Leah Williamson cut their second to up the lead to 2-0. Kelly scored her second of the night five minutes into the second half as the power continued.

In the 78th minute, Belgium’s Julie Biesmans cut on herself to get the score to 4-0. Lucy Bronze took it in the 88th minute, just before Belgium’s Elena Dhont achieved a consolation goal in backup time to bring the score to 5-1. Williamson responded with her two-goal just seconds later, bringing the last score to 6-1 to win the Arnold Clark Cup. Kelly, who ended up as the leading goalscorer in the competition, won the Golden Boot.
This was a rehearsal run to the World Cup this summer for the Lionesses, and Wiegman wanted to use the tournament to work on and see which varieties work best with her team.
“When you go into a tournament, whatever it is, you want to beat it,” Wiegman said. “We liked to try out some things, we wanted to see lots of players, some varieties of players, and we also liked to manage loads, and that’s just what we did.”

Wiegman made nine shifts for the 2-1 win on Sunday over Italy, but for the match against Belgium, she saved almost the same lineup she had for the 4-0 victory against South Korea, the only distinction being Keira Walsh in instead of Jess Carter. She made 18 changes over the last eight days during the road trip. It’s been a good test, but Belgium still needs to offer the spell that England will face this summer.
The lineup could look quite distinct come this summer. Beth Mead will be from an ACL injury, and Fran Kirby also had to miss the tournament with an injury maintained just before. Lauren Hemp and Rachel Daly could also provide competition, and Daly scored both goals on headers in their 2-1 defeat over Italy.
England’s following tests will be much more complex. They will face Brazil at Wembley in April, obeyed by Australia in Brentford as the preparations continue for the World Cup this summer. The World Cup will be stored in Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to August 20, with England to face China, Denmark, and Haiti in Group D.
