A woman’s body has been removed from the sea after being found in the water off the seaside town of Saltburn.
Cleveland Police said officers were called to Saltburn Beach on Sunday afternoon by ambulance service colleagues responding to describe a body in the water.
“Sadly, the body of a female was recovered from the sea shortly afterwards,” the force said.
It said formal identification was yet to occur, adding: “Our thoughts are with the deceased person’s family at this tough time.”
The force added that inquiries into the circumstances of the woman’s death are ongoing.
The tragic discovery happened off the North Yorkshire seaside town of Saltburn, or Saltburn-by-the-Sea, a famous Victorian resort tourist spot.
The incident comes as the family of a 17-year-old boy who died after being pulled from the sea in Bournemouth issued a heartfelt tribute to him.
Joe Abbess and a 12-year-old girl died in an incident involving ten swimmers last week.
Dorset Police is investigating the incident.

In a statement, Joe’s family described him as “kind and generous, loving and caring, hardworking and funny”.
“Joe was a talented trainee chef with a bright future. We are so sorry he will never fulfil his dreams and ambitions,” they said.
They said Joe had been enjoying a day at the beach, adding: “We would like to thank his friends and all of the emergency services who helped him when this tragedy unfolded.”
The Great North Air Ambulance, the North East Ambulance Service, and Cleveland Police were called to the scene just before 2 pm today (Sunday, June 4).
Enquiries into the circumstances of the female’s death are ongoing.
A spokesperson for Cleveland Police said: “Police were called to Saltburn Beach earlier this afternoon by ambulance service colleagues responding to a report of a body in the water.
A North East Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “We received a call to 999 at 13:35 to reports of a body recovered from the water.
“The coastguard attended the scene, and we dispatched two double-crewed ambulances, a specialist paramedic, and the air ambulance.”
A spokesman for RNLI Redcar confirmed that at 1:53 pm, both lifeboats were launched to assist with an incident between Marske and Saltburn.
Cleveland Police has confirmed that formal identification has yet to take place, and enquiries into the circumstances surrounding her death are ongoing. Witnesses reported a massive emergency response on Sunday, with the North East Ambulance Service sending two double-crewed ambulances, a specialist paramedic, and the air ambulance to the scene.
The Humber Coastguard confirmed that a search and rescue operation was underway just before 4 pm but could not allow further details on the incident.
Redcar RNLI said on Facebook that it launched both lifeboats to assist with an incident between Marske and Saltburn at 1.53 pm.
