“Ed” Balls (born 25 February 1967) is a British politician who belongs to the Labour Party and the Co-operative Party. He has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Morley and Outwood since 2010, where he also serves as Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer since 2011. From 2005 to 2010, he served as the Member of Parliament for Normanton, and from 2007 to 2010, he served as Secretary of State for Children, Schools, and Families under Prime Minister Gordon Brown. A married couple, Balls is married to Yvette Cooper, who is now the Shadow Home Secretary and a fellow Labour MP. Cooper was appointed Chief Secretary to the Treasury in June 2007, making them the first married pair to serve together in a British Cabinet.
