Euro 2020 top scorer: Cristiano Ronaldo wins Golden Boot award

E

Cristiano Ronaldo has won the Euro 2020 Golden Boot award after finishing with five goals to his name – and one all-important assist.

The Portugal forward suffered a last-16 exit with his nation after they were beaten by Belgium, but his big haul in the group stage ensured he was uncatchable by the rest of the forwards who went the distance.

Czech Republic striker Patrik Schick – who netted arguably the goal of the tournament with his incredible long-range effort against Scotland – also scored five, but Uefa’s tie-breaking criteria for those level on goals states that the next deciding factor is assists.

Ronaldo therefore claims the award, having set up Diogo Jota for a tap-in against Germany, while Schick did not register an assist.

Harry Kane netted four for England but couldn’t add to his tally in the final against Italy, with Karim Benzema of France and Sweden’s Emil Forsberg also hitting the same amount.

Kane finished up the qualifying campaign as the top scorer on 12 goals and Gareth Southgate will hope the likes of Jack Grealish, Mason Mount, Phil Foden, Jadon Sancho, Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford can supply the bullets for the Tottenham striker.

A midfielder could also emerge as the top scorer, given the potential for a low-scoring tournament, as proven when six players tied on three goals at Euro 2012, including Mario Mandzukic, Mario Gómez, Mario Balotelli, Cristiano Ronaldo, Alan Dzagoev and Fernando Torres.
