Many expected Brendan Rodgers’ side to thump the Blue Square Bet Premier side, but they put up a great fight and gave the Reds a few scares on the day.
Daniel Sturridge opened the scoring on his Liverpool debut after just seven minutes, finishing clinically to give his side the perfect start. The score remained that way until the break.
Luis Suarez emerged as a second half substitute, and with the home side causing the visitors trouble, the Uruguayan scored a controversial effort that hit his hand on the way in.
Matt Green’s goal for Mansfield eleven minutes from time ended up being a consolation, but it was a far from comfortable afternoon for Rodgers and his men.
LIVERPOOL 5-1 OLDHAM- 6th January 2012
Liverpool host Oldham on Sunday, and they hosted the same side in the same round two years ago.
Robbie Simpson’s superb opener stunned Anfield, but from that point on Liverpool dominated as expected. Craig Bellamy equalised just two minutes later, before Steven Gerrard’s penalty on the stroke of half-time made it 2-1.
Second half goals from Jonjo Shelvey, Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing completed the rout, as Kenny Dalglish‘s side progressed to round four.
MAN UTD 1-0 LIVERPOOL- 9th January 2011
This day marked the unforgettable return of Dalglish as Liverpool manager, but the legendary Scot couldn’t prevent a disappointing defeat to bitter rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford.
The game was settled by Ryan Giggs’ early penalty, with Daniel Agger adjudged to have fouled Dimitar Berbatov after just 30 seconds.
Gerrard was sent off on the half-hour mark, after lunging in on United midfielder Michael Carrick. It was debatably a harsh decision, and it made it almost impossible for Liverpool in their quest to get back in the game.

In the original tie at the Madejski Stadium, Gerrard cancelled out Simon Church’s opener to take the game to a replay at Anfield. Many expected Liverpool to prevail.
A Ryan Bertrand own goal, via Gerrard’s cross, seemingly put the Reds in control, and they looked to be going through as the game drifted into stoppage time.
Gylfi Sigurdsson’s last-gasp penalty took the game into extra-time, and Shane Long’s header dumped Rafa Benitez’s team out of the FA Cup.
PRESTON 0-2 LIVERPOOL- 3rd January 2009
A routine victory over Preston for Benitez’s men back in 2009 saw them progress to the last-32 with relative ease.
Albert Riera’s terrific strike put the visitors ahead 23 minutes into the game, and although Sean St Legder’s effort was ruled out for a foul by Jon Parkin, Liverpool rarely looked troubled.
Gerrard raced through on goal and found Fernando Torres in stoppage time, and the Spaniard put the icing on the cake in what was a solid day at the office for the Reds.
