Kevin Campbell talks up Billy Gilmour move

Gilmour is back at Chelsea after spending the 2021/22 season on loan at Norwich City, who finished bottom of the Premier League and suffered relegation.

He started 21 top-flight matches for the Canaries and made 28 appearances across the board.

Gilmour, valued at £10.8million by Transfermarkt, is under contract at Stamford Bridge for another two years.

The Scotsman is represented by ICM Stellar Sports, whose clients also include Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Campbell, who played for Everton between 1999 and 2005 and now works as a pundit for Sky, says that Gilmour may be able to tick key stylistic boxes for Lampard. He wouldn’t be surprised, therefore, to see the Toffees boss sanction a move.

Campbell, who played for Everton between 1999 and 2005 and now works as a pundit for Sky, says that Gilmour may be able to tick key stylistic boxes for Lampard. He wouldn’t be surprised, therefore, to see the Toffees boss sanction a move.

“I think what Frank Lampard’s trying to do is obviously get somebody in that centre of the park who can dictate the tempo of a game,” he told Goodison News.

“And Billy Gilmour’s done that. He’s done that for Chelsea. I’ve seen him do it at times for Norwich, and I’ve seen him do it for Scotland.

“So is it something that he might pursue? Yeah he might pursue it, that’s for sure.”

Gilmour can construct attacks from his midfield role. He ranks in the top 20 percentiles for progressive passing distance (81st) and switches of play (98th).

According to FBRef, he’s similar in style to Wolves duo Joao Moutinho and Ruben Neves.

He can be the conductor Lampard wants at the base of midfield, and the 43-year-old may be well-placed to land him given his reputation and connections at Chelsea.

Lampard is the club’s all-time record goalscorer and, of course, had a stint as manager from the summer of 2019 until July 2021.
