With the No. 12 agreeing to remain with Liverpool beyond his 30th birthday, there are likely to have been assurances of regular game time as part of Klopp’s defence.
It remains to be seen who will begin the new campaign as first-choice starter alongside Virgil van Dijk, with Gomez expected to challenge Konate and Joel Matip for the spot.
But as Liverpool fans took to Twitter to react to Gomez’s new deal, many looked further ahead to a long-term partnership with Konate.
Despite only having turned 25 at the end of May, Gomez is a highly experienced defender, with seven seasons at Liverpool already under his belt.
He joined as an 18-year-old in 2015, and though injuries have held him back, he has proved himself an elite centre-back who, if fit, would be a regular starter for England, too.
Though Van Dijk is primed to stay at the top for many years yet, Liverpool have future-proofed their defence with Gomez and Konate both tied down into their prime years.
