Oli Hawkins in talks with League One rivals Ipswich

Former Portsmouth striker Oli Hawkins is in talks with Ipswich Town over a potential summer move, according to TWTD.

Having missed out on promotion from League One to the Championship, losing to Oxford United on penalties in the play-off semi-final, Pompey manager Kenny Jackett opted not to extend Hawkins’ contract.

After his contract came to an end at Fratton Park, the striker revealed his ‘surprise‘ shortly after about not being handed a new deal.

Hawkins arrived at Portsmouth in 2017 and the Ealing-born striker netted 18 goals in 95 games for the club up until the end of the 2019/20 season. During his time at Pompey, he has also acted as a stand-in defender and scored the winning penalty against Sunderland in the 2019 EFL Trophy final.

With transfer rumours starting to begin, TWTD – who often report breaking Ipswich Town news – have now claimed that a deal is being discussed for Hawkins to move to Portman Road.

Ipswich, much like Portsmouth, will be keen to push for a promotion next year, with boss Paul Lambert having seen his side struggle for consistency throughout the last campaign as they finished a lowly 11th.

Hawkins has previously been linked with a move to the Blues back in January 2017 and that interest has now returned, with discussions over a free transfer emerging.

Hawkins seemed slightly bemused as to why he did not get a new deal at Fratton Park but what better way to prove yourself than joining a rival league team and potentially finishing higher than your former club. This is one which could come back to haunt Pompey.
