2022 Men’s Draft Picks Hundred will be revealed on Tuesday, along with the Aussie hitter David Warner and Caribbean star Chris Gayle among the best foreign talents to win.
Warner and Gayle are two of seven players with reserve prices at the maximum level of £125,000, alongside Pakistan Babar AzamSouth African spinner Tabraiz Shamsi and West Indian trio Sunil Narine, Kieron Pollard and Nicholas Pooran.
A total of 585 players have registered for the draft, with the eight competing teams able to choose from 285 foreign applicants, plus 250 domestic options.
Available England talent includes 21 capped internationals looking for offers, including recent Test debutants Alex Lees and Matthew Fisher, as well as Tom Banton, Liam Dawson and Olly Stone.
The selections were to be made behind closed doors on Monday before being made public a day later. New recruits for the women’s competition, which does not have a draft system, are also expected to be unveiled.
A combined total of 42 places have yet to be filled in the men’s squads for the 100-Ball Tournament, with 11 places vacant in the £125,000 bracket.
T20 World Cup winner Warner withdrew from last year’s kick-off tournament due to travel difficulties surrounding Covid-19, who was due to play for eventual champions Southern Brave.
The 35-year-old is the most high-profile Australian involved in the draft as compatriots such as Steve Smith, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood weren’t on the long list of prospects.
Foreign talents available also include the International Cricket Council’s top-ranked T20 hitter (Babar), bowler (Shamsi) and all-rounder (Mohammad Nabi).
The selection process has been postponed for a week due to state funeral of Shane Warnedied last month aged 52 and was London Spirit’s head coach for the inaugural competition in 2021.
Spirit, who on Monday announced England coach Trevor Bayliss, World Cup winner as Warne’s interim successor, have the coveted top pick after finishing bottom of the standings last year.
Men’s teams were allowed to retain up to 10 players from last season before the retention window closed in February.
After the draft, each team will make two more picks, which will be confirmed in June. One of them is the Vitality Wildcard and allows teams to select an additional player for a £30,000 slot, while the other is the Foreign Wildcard.
The second season of the competition kicks off on Wednesday, August 3.
Defending men’s champions Southern Brave – who have secured pitcher Jofra Archer – will kick off the tournament, welcoming a Welsh Fire squad that already includes England duo Jonny Bairstow and Ollie Pope.
Women’s matches begin eight days later, with the Northern Supercharges traveling to defending champions Oval Invincibles.
