Recent property marketing states it is ‘located on the prime pitch of Deansgate in Bolton town centre’.
In documents submitted to Bolton Council this week, Skipton has sought a development certificate for the proposed use of the ground floor for financial services instead of the previous retail use. The unit has been in retail use since 1977, with the last occupier being a jeweller.
The three-storey building underwent extensive renovation in 2018. The planning document said: “The applicants propose to use the ground floor of this building for financial services to provide a network branch for Skipton Building Society.
“The basement, which provides storage space and staff facilities including toilets, will be used on an ancillary basis to the ground floor network branch. The existing and file uses fall within the same use class, so planning permission is not required for a change of use.”

The move to more extensive and modern premises would indicate a show of commitment to Bolton from the Society during large-scale high street branch closures in the banking sector. Skipton, which was formed in 1853. currently lists 88 branches open in the UK on its website.
Calling Grainger Street home for over a quarter of a century, Skipton’s Newcastle branch has served customers in the city and beyond since 1997.
And to mark the branch’s relocation, the team held a celebratory launch day on Wednesday, 22nd March, where customers joined them for a slice of cake and ceremonial ribbon cutting.
Sarah Thompson, Branch Leader for Skipton’s Newcastle location, said: “It’s such a stirring time to be leading Skipton’s Newcastle branch. I’m looking forward to seeing the team flourish in their new location.
“Moving to Northumberland Street gives us an extraordinary new level of visibility to current and future customers. It’ll be great to rub shoulders with some of the city’s best retailers.”

Lee Holden, Head of Branch Operations for Skipton Building Society, said: “The previous base on Grainger Street has served our customers and us well for the last 25 years, but I’m delighted that our current and future customers will now be able to visit us on Newcastle’s busiest shopping thoroughfare.
“From a colleague’s perspective, I’m proud to bring the entire team to a new location. They’re the lifeblood of the branch, and I’m looking forward to seeing them make Northumberland Street their home.”
Skipton Building Society – part of the Skipton Group – has been proudly serving its members up and down the country since 1853. Today, the Society has 87 branches nationwide, serving over 1.1 million members.
