The biggest independent timber distribution and processing group in the UK has made another acquisition.

National Timber Group, which is based in Sheffield, has acquired Derbyshire-based SV Timber Limited, which has a turnover of around £17 million and a 50-strong workforce.

National Timber Group – which is owned by London and Edinburgh-based private investment firm Cairngorm Capital Partners – supplies a broad customer base including joiners, housebuilders, and contractors, as well as large-scale infrastructure projects.

It has a network of warehousing, processing and distribution facilities providing timber, panel, decorative surfaces and engineered wood products.

It was created after Cairngorm Capital bought Scottish timber merchant Thornbridge in 2017, later adding NYTimber, Rembrand Timber and Arnold Laver. The umbrella group has a combined turnover of more than £350 million, along with more than 1,350 employees and 60 processing and distribution sites from the North of Scotland to London and the South West.

SV Timber was established in 2004, supplying trade and commercial customers, including joiners and manufacturers, from three branches across the Midlands. It recently supplied the timber for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

The new owners said it will fill a geographical gap in its existing branch network and further extend its customer reach within the Midlands.

SV Timber’s shareholders Edward Holder and Richard Rowley will remain with the business and continue to play leading roles in the integration and combined growth of the group, including the relocation of SV Timber’s flagship site from Ilkeston to new, larger premises in Nottingham.

National Timber Group chief executive Rob Barclay said: “We are delighted to welcome SV Timber to the Group – our shared expertise and commitment to our customers makes this an obvious and complementary partnership.

“Together, we will extend our range of services in the Midlands, improving our customers’ experience.”

SV Timber managing director Edward Holder said: “As the founder of the business, I am extremely proud of what the team at SV Timber has achieved to this point.

“We know that the business is capable of achieving much more over the coming years. The priority was to find a partner with shared goals and values who would help us to fulfil the future potential.
