Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s largest IT services firm, has signed a six-year contract, with an extended-term opportunity, with the United Kingdom-headquartered Rail Delivery Group to build and run the UK government Rail Data Marketplace (RDM).
The IT services major use TCS Dexam to design, develop, implement and operate RDM, and expect to bring together fragmented origins of rail data into one digital service to accelerate innovation in the transport sector and enhance the passenger experience.

RDM is used to share real-time information with passengers across the UK, simplify data sharing across operational bodies, and increase data access for public and private bodies to improve transparency.
We are happy to lead this strategic agenda with the Rail Delivery Group.
The platform can track environmental parameters, allowing it to support the UK rail decarbonization agenda, he adds.

Simon Moorhead, CIO & Member of the Board, of Rail Delivery Group, said by winning a challenging competitive tender, TCS was able to show its ability to help the creative launch of the Rail Data Marketplace.
This brand-new service will build on the capability created in TCS’s Dexam product supported by Google integration tools, Moorehead said.
It would offer access to new data sources and present existing data in more accessible formats to help businesses use open data to speed change, reduce costs and create new value for customers, he said.
IT major Tata Consultancy Services Wednesday said that it bagged a deal from Rail Delivery Group to create, design, execute, and use the UK’s Rail Data Marketplace.

The agreement between TCS and RDG (Rail Data Marketplace) is for a term of six years including an extension term opportunity.

Built on TCS Dexam, the Rail Data Marketplace can not provide data relating to the rail industry but presents adjacent data sources important to passengers and operators and helps deliver an improved experience for the user.

In addition, the platform’s ability to track environmental parameter, allow it to support the UK’s rail decarbonization agenda, TCS UK and Ireland, Country Head, Amit Kapur said in a statement.

The RDM together fragmented the source of rail data into one digital service to accelerate innovation in the transport sector and enhance the passenger experience.

The scheme was first reported in 2021 by the UK Rail Minister, Chris Heaton-Harris, as part of his plan to stimulate collaboration between the government and industry to accelerate innovation and deliver new products and services to enhance passenger experience and the effective movement of freight.

The RDM offer tools and frameworks to enhance the sharing of data and real-time information to passengers across the UK. This will simplify data sharing across operational bodies, including the UK’s rail and non-rail transportation and the mobility network. It will also improve the key to data for public and private bodies, improving transparency and facilitating a UK-wide railway innovation ecosystem.

The development of the RDM, TCS will leverage TCS Dexam-controlled data exchange environment for enterprises and their ecosystem partners. It enables democratization, monetization, and data-preserving commercialization security privacy, and consent of data and its stakeholders. Also, TCS uses Google’s Apigee forum to develop and securely manage the APIs that partner applications will use to connect with the RDM.
