Return to heaven

Top Gunn: Maverick producer Jerry Bruckheimer said he was “happy” that the premiere would help The Film and TV Charity. “After 36 years, we are excited to bring Captain Pete Maverick Mitchell back on the big screen with an amazing cast and a truly talented crew,” he said.

“We know that audiences around the world will love to return to heaven in this long-awaited return, and we are thrilled to be able to support such an amazing charity that continues to help and support the UK film industry.”

Originally called the Royal Command Film Performance, the first Royal Film Performance took place at Leicester Square’s Empire Cinema in 1946, with King George VI and Queen Elizabeth attending, along with Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, to watch A Matter of Life and Death, with starring David Niven.

Prince Charles and Camilla took part in the last performance, which included a screening of the 1917 World War I epic, directed by Sir Sam Mendes, and took place at the Odeon Luxe in Leicester Square in 2019.

John Fletcher, managing director of Paramount Pictures UK, said the company was “honored” to premiere the film as a Royal Film Show.

“We feel that this worthy charity is a fantastic partner for this long-awaited film, and on behalf of Paramount, we look forward to welcoming everyone to what we hope will be the most memorable evening,” he said.

Alex Pumfrey, chief executive of The Film and TV Charity, said the organization had supported more than 10,000 people during the pandemic.

“The last few years have been incredibly difficult for everyone, not least for the people behind the scenes who have seen their livelihood threatened by the pandemic,” she said.

“After such a challenging time, I really feel special to use the platform, which is The Royal Film Performance, to celebrate the return of cinema for events, and also to shed light on the support we can offer to those who do their best. . “
