Netflix is developing some fantastic shows and expanding its collection of quality content. Recently, as the year ends, Netflix has added another hit show that is a fan favourite. Yes, we are addressing Treason.
Treason is a brilliant and must-see spy drama. The entire story holds the attention of the audience. Treason revolves around Adam Lawrence, who has been trained and prepped by MI6 and whose profession is already set. But things don’t go easy on him.
In Adam’s life, a confrontation is on the horizon. A chance encounter in the series causes him to doubt everything in his life. Let’s take a closer look at whether we’ll get a second season of this spy thriller.
Netflix does not renew miniseries or limited series for a second season. In just five episodes, the entire story is wrapped up. If you binge-watched the series, you already know how it ends.
Though sometimes a miniseries get upgraded to a regular one, that’s one in hundreds. And we might get fewer seasons of Treason.
New Additions and Returning Favorites
Netflix describes the series: “An MI6 deputy’s blazing future takes a sharp turn after a meeting. With a Russian spy forces him to question his entire life.”
Charlie Cox talked about Treason being a unique spy thriller.
He said, “Matt Chapman, the writer and showrunner, was interested in how someone involved in MI6 and has worked in that area for most of his life is how it affects the family.
Despite what the trailer might suggest, there’s little action in the show because a trailer is a trailer.
Much of it deals with the relationships with Adam’s wife and his children and the pressures for someone who lives and works in that world, especially when they come under fire, especially when there’s extreme adversity, and how they handle that. That was one of the goals, how to set it apart from other shows in that genre.”
He continued, “I’m now a father to young children, and I haven’t had children on camera before, so I was excited about that.
So much of this story in the first episodes revolves around the emotional trauma of his daughter, so I was excited from an acting point of view to explore that, to see what it was like to be a father on screen and to dive into those feelings and those relationships.
A Look at the Talent in “Treason” Season 2
But if you take James Bond as the pinnacle of spy genre content, what was interesting to me about this was we got to see a little bit more behind the curtain, we got to see some of the quote-unquote unflashy elements of what a spy has to deal with, and we get to go home with them.
We get to go on a date night with them, he puts the children to bed, and his innocent children ask him pretty pointed questions at times when he’s entirely questioning his morality.”
Sad news, folks. As of February 2023, there has been no announcement about a second season of Treason.
The show was always billed as a “limited series”, which typically means it has only one outing — so that’s not the best sign.
However, there have been exceptions to this rule if fan demand is strong. Big Little Lies got extended, and The White Lotus became an anthology… there are ways to go about this.
The Impressive Cast of “Treason” Season 2
So, there could be life for Treason in the future (even if that twist ending seemed a little bleak).
Suppose the initial response was strong enough, especially within the four weeks that follow the show’s Boxing Day launch. In that case, Netflix could reconsider and commission a second season to capitalise on that.
On the one hand, a new storyline starring Olga Kurylenko as Kara is the best bet. As someone still active in the field, Kara could get caught up in a brand-new case anywhere in the world, be it her native Russia or a new setting elsewhere.
Saying that, though, we were also quite surprised by how capable Maddy was by the end of season one. Given Maddy’s new vendetta against Dede, her husband’s killer, we would tune into a story of vengeance that puts Oona Chaplin front and centre.
And if Treason turns out to be as popular as we suspect, then a prequel season could also work. It could shed new light on Adam’s time with Kara in Baku.
Or, Netflix could go down another route entirely and make this series an anthology that revolves around the theme of betrayal. It wouldn’t be the first time this has happened…
