We watched BBC One’s 2023 Eurovision Song Contest broadcast in Liverpool with slightly over 2 million viewers.
The 67th Eurovision Song Contest kicked off last night with the first of a series of shows of the competition for the BBC. Eurovision Welcomes the World was broadcast from 18:30 to 19:30 on BBC One and featured highlights from the Turquoise Carpet and National Lottery Welcome Show on Sunday.
BBC One is becoming the home of the Eurovision Song Contest this week as Liverpool hosts the competition on behalf of Ukraine. Tonight’s semi-final is being broadcast live on BBC One for the first time, having traditionally been on BBC Three and BBC Four.
EUROVISION 2023
Liverpool is hosting the Eurovision Song Contest at M&S Bank Arena. They were decided after multiple rounds of shortlisting different UK cities, as Ukraine needed help to host the winners of the 2022 competition. Eurovision 2023 will be held on 9, 11 and 13 May.
Liverpool is known worldwide as the birthplace of the Beatles and music events such as Africa Way, Liverpool, with a population of just under 500,000, boasts iconic music venues and cultural events, including the Liverpool International Music Festival and Sound City. The town is connected to the world via Liverpool John Lennon Airport.
The 2023 competition will be the first competition since 1979 in which the winning country cannot host the following competition. It is the sixth occasion overall that, On several occasions, a different government has taken on the hosting role after the original host nation could not fulfil the responsibility. This happened in the past with countries such as the Netherlands in 1960, France in 1963, Monaco in 1972, Luxembourg in 1974, Israel in 1980, and Ukraine in 2023. The competition will extend the United Kingdom’s record for hosting Eurovision nine times.
